Bhubaneswar, Sept. 23 (UDN): The Odisha Legislative Assembly was adjourned till 4 pm on Wednesday after Congress and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) legislators staged protests during Question Hour over the amended Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act and alleged errors in school textbooks.
Opposition Members Enter Well
Trouble broke out soon after Question Hour began on the second day of the monsoon session, with Opposition legislators moving into the Well of the House and raising slogans against the amended MMDR Act.
The protesting members demanded that the government take steps for withdrawal of the amendments and raised concerns over their implications.
BJD legislators simultaneously drew attention to alleged inaccuracies in school textbooks, seeking clarification and a response from the government.
Deputy Speaker Appeals for Order
With the Opposition members continuing to raise slogans and display placards, Deputy Speaker Bhabani Shankar Bhoi appealed to them to return to their seats and allow the proceedings to continue.
Despite repeated appeals, the protests persisted, making it difficult for the House to conduct Question Hour in a normal manner.
House Adjourned Till 4 PM
As the disruption continued, the Deputy Speaker adjourned the Assembly till 4 pm.
Opposition legislators continued their protest over both issues following the adjournment, maintaining pressure on the government over the amended mining law and the alleged errors in school textbooks.
The developments came on the second day of the monsoon session, with the protests overshadowing the scheduled Question Hour proceedings.
