Odisha Government Rolls Out Major Initiatives for Sanitation Workers, Focus on Workplace Safety, Dignity, Welfare and Social Security

Bhubaneswar,  Aug 28 [UDN}:The Odisha Government has announced major initiatives aimed at ensuring the safety, dignity and social security of sanitation workers across the state. Addressing the ‘Garima’ Workshop, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi made several important announcements for the welfare and protection of sanitation workers.
The Chief Minister said sanitation workers play a crucial role in keeping cities and villages clean. He emphasized that they should not be viewed merely as workers, but should be treated with dignity and provided with a safe and secure working environment.
According to reports, the government will make arrangements to provide financial compensation to the families of sanitation workers in the event of their death. On the occasion, assistance of ₹10 lakh each was reportedly provided to the families of two deceased sanitation workers.
Importantly, the reported announcement states that financial assistance will not be restricted only to deaths occurring while performing sanitation-related duties. Families may also receive assistance if a sanitation worker dies due to other causes, as per the government’s proposed provisions.
The government has also focused on the housing needs of sanitation workers. The Chief Minister reportedly said that sanitation workers who have not yet received a house will be provided housing at the earliest.
The government is also emphasizing the increased use of machines and robotics to make sanitation work safer. The objective is to reduce the direct involvement of humans in hazardous sanitation activities and use modern machinery and technology instead. Special emphasis has been placed on achieving the ‘Mission Zero’ target.
If implemented effectively, these announcements could strengthen the financial security, housing support and workplace safety of sanitation workers and their families across Odisha. Sanitation workers and their families will now be watching closely for the detailed guidelines concerning eligibility, implementation and the scope of these measures.
