The mounting unpaid bills have created significant cash flow challenges for the discoms, affecting their ability to manage operational expenses and invest in strengthening the power distribution network. The companies continue to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply despite the growing financial burden.
The largest share of the pending dues is reportedly owed by key government departments, with several payments remaining outstanding for an extended period. The delay has increased the working capital requirements of the discoms, forcing them to bear additional financial costs.
Power sector stakeholders have emphasized that timely payment of electricity bills by government departments is essential for maintaining the financial sustainability of distribution companies. Prompt settlement of outstanding dues would help utilities continue investing in infrastructure modernization, improve service quality, and support reliable power supply across the state.
The issue highlights the need for faster clearance of government dues to strengthen the financial health of Odisha’s power distribution sector and ensure the long-term sustainability of electricity services for consumers.
