Bhubaneswar, Oct 23: The Odisha government has stepped up preparedness amid the possibility of a cyclonic system developing over the Bay of Bengal, with a clearer assessment of its intensity and potential impact expected by October 25, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said.

A low-pressure area is likely to form over the southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal and may subsequently intensify into a depression and a stronger weather system. However, its eventual strength, trajectory and possible impact on the Odisha coast remain uncertain.
The state government is closely monitoring the evolving situation in coordination with the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the minister said, assuring residents that precautionary measures are being considered.
Government Monitoring Weather Models
Pujari said the government was examining projections from European weather models while remaining in constant contact with the IMD for updated assessments.
According to the minister, the system may intensify gradually and is expected to move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast. However, its precise movement and the possibility of further intensification will depend on subsequent meteorological observations.
Although some weather projections have raised the possibility of the system strengthening into a severe cyclone, the minister stressed that its intensity and the extent of any potential damage had not yet been conclusively established.
‘People Need Not Panic’
Appealing to the public to remain calm, Pujari said the state government was prepared to respond to the evolving weather situation.
“The people of Odisha need not panic; the government is prepared,” the minister said, emphasising that authorities were keeping a close watch on developments.
The government is awaiting further inputs from the IMD before drawing a clearer picture of the system and its possible implications for the state.
Cyclone Threat Under Close Watch
The developing weather system has drawn attention as the Bay of Bengal remains a region where low-pressure systems can intensify under favourable atmospheric and oceanic conditions.
The next few days are expected to be crucial in determining the system’s strength, direction and potential effects on coastal areas.
For now, officials are monitoring fresh forecasts, with a more definite assessment expected by October 25. Residents are advised to follow official IMD bulletins and government advisories rather than rely on unverified reports or speculative forecasts.
