Bhubaneswar, Sept. 16 (UDN): Odisha has expanded its weather monitoring network with the commissioning of a new C-band Doppler Weather Radar in Sambalpur, a move aimed at improving forecasting accuracy and strengthening disaster preparedness across western parts of the state.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is scheduled to inaugurate the radar facility at Jogipali on Tuesday afternoon after arriving at the Jamadarpali Airstrip.
Wider weather coverage
The newly installed radar has a monitoring range of approximately 250 kilometres, enabling meteorologists to track rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms and other weather systems across a large part of western Odisha.
Officials said the system has already begun transmitting weather data during its trial phase, which will help improve real-time monitoring and short-term weather forecasts.
Boost to early warning system
The addition of the Sambalpur radar is expected to enhance Odisha’s early warning capabilities, particularly during heavy rainfall events, thunderstorms and flood-like situations.
More accurate and timely forecasts will allow authorities to issue quicker alerts and improve disaster response planning, reinforcing the state’s weather surveillance infrastructure.
Support for farmers and fishermen
The improved forecasting system is also expected to benefit farmers by providing more reliable weather information for planning agricultural activities, including sowing, irrigation and harvesting.
Fishermen are likely to gain from earlier warnings about adverse weather conditions, helping them make safer decisions before venturing into water bodies.
With the new installation, Odisha has further strengthened its expanding network of weather observation systems, improving its ability to monitor rapidly changing weather patterns and support disaster risk management across the state.
