Bhubaneswar, Aug. 4 (UDN): In a major step towards strengthening disaster preparedness, the Odisha government has decided to upgrade the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) into the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), aligning the state’s emergency response mechanism with the national disaster management framework.

The decision was taken during a high-level review meeting on disaster preparedness and management chaired by the Revenue Minister. Once the transition is completed, the force will operate as the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) with an expanded mandate, enhanced operational capabilities and a more structured disaster response system.
To support the transformation, the government will formulate a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) outlining the roles, responsibilities and operational protocols of the upgraded force. The revised framework is expected to improve inter-agency coordination, speed up emergency response and strengthen disaster management across the state.
As part of the expansion, 10 new SDRF units will be established, increasing the total number of units from 20 to 30. The government also plans to enhance the force’s manpower, training, equipment, logistics and infrastructure to ensure a faster and more efficient response during emergencies.
The upgraded SDRF will play a key role in responding to cyclones, floods, landslides, earthquakes and other natural or man-made disasters. The move is expected to further reinforce Odisha’s reputation as one of India’s leading states in disaster management and resilience.
Officials said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to building a modern, well-equipped and highly responsive disaster management force capable of protecting lives and minimising damage during emergencies.
