Poverty and Government Initiatives in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, March 28, 2025: Malkangiri district has the highest poverty rate in Odisha at 45.01%, followed by Rayagada, Nabarangpur, and Koraput. Puri and Khurda have the lowest poverty rates at 3.29% and 3.95%.

The Odisha government is tackling poverty through initiatives like the Madhubabu Pension Scheme, National Social Security, and Food Security Programs. These provide financial aid and ensure food security. The Pradhan Mantri Gramin Rozgar Yojana also creates employment in rural areas.

The government is focusing on skill development with programs like the Dindayal Upadhyay Rural Skills Scheme and supporting marginalized communities through the Scheduled Caste Upliftment Program and Ayushman Bharat. Additionally, the “Subhadra” scheme empowers women, and the state prioritizes job creation in agriculture and small businesses.
