Puri, June 12: preparations for the upcoming Rath Yatra intensify, the city of Puri has launched its second consecutive environmental management drive to ensure a clean, plastic-free festival.
The initiative is being carried out in collaboration with Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages, Anandana Coca-Cola India Foundation, Puri Municipality, district administration, and the Odisha Development Management Programme. It aligns with the national call to action for environmental protection, highlighted by the Prime Minister on World Environment Day 2025.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has emphasized the importance of eco-friendly alternatives and efficient waste management. The state government is engaging communities through awareness campaigns to promote a greener Odisha.
In a recent review meeting, senior officials including the Housing and Urban Development Minister and the Forest and Environment Department leadership acknowledged the contributions of corporate partners and volunteers who are actively working to reduce plastic waste.
Building on the achievements of 2024—where over 17,000 kg of plastic was collected—the 2025 campaign includes a volunteer training program (June 26 to July 5), setting up of PET collection centers, beach cleanups, and the installation of 200 dustbins across Puri. Other planned activities include help desks, street performances, and public pledge drives to increase participation and awareness.
With strong coordination among the government, civil society, and religious institutions, Rath Yatra 2025 aims to not only be spiritually enriching but also an example of environmental responsibility.
