Puri, june 18 (UDN): Chariot construction work for the annual Rath Yatra has reached its 58th day at the Rathkhala in Puri, with craftsmen beginning the preparation of the Istha (axle component) used in the chariots.
Work at the site witnessed a temporary halt of nearly four hours in the morning due to internal issues among servitors, despite workers arriving at around 8 AM. Construction resumed around noon and progressed steadily thereafter.
As part of the ongoing work, skilled carpenters (Maharanas) have started shaping and assembling the Istha after cutting and sizing the required timber components. The Istha plays a crucial role in the chariot structure, as it supports the attachment of the horses used during the pulling of the chariots.
Simultaneously, other structural works are also progressing. Wooden beams are being fitted on the second and third levels of the chariots, while plank installation and nail fitting work continues across all three chariots. The rear structures, including Dhmak and supporting components, have been secured, and fastening work has been completed in several sections.
Artisan groups are engaged in multiple parallel activities. Woodcarvers (Rupakar Sevaks) are continuing intricate carvings of decorative motifs, while blacksmiths (Ozhia Kamars) are manufacturing essential iron components, including nails, clamps, and silver fittings required for structural reinforcement.
Painting and finishing work is also underway, with Chitrakar servitors applying primer coats on chariot wheels, wooden panels, and decorative elements. The overall construction process remains active across all designated workshops, including temporary smithy units set up near Dolabedi.
Officials and servitors said that further structural stages, including installation of the Jagat Prushta Senis and the chariot throne (Bedi Singhasan), will follow after completion of the current phase.
