Rourkela, March 20: Construction of an 8 million litre per day (MLD) sewage treatment plant (STP) at Koel Nagar is set to begin in April. This initiative aims to curb the pollution in Koel River, benefiting both the local community and the environment.
Currently, untreated sewage from Koel Nagar is directly discharged into the river, worsening water quality. The new STP, worth ₹33 crore, will help treat sewage before it reaches the river. The project will also include the development of sewage drains in areas like Udit Nagar, Civil Township, and Chhend.
Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC) has allocated two acres of land for the project. The plant will help significantly reduce pollution levels in the river, improving both the local ecosystem and public health. Additionally, RMC plans to establish a smaller 1 MLD STP in Jhirpani soon.
This new infrastructure is expected to improve sewage management in the region, addressing a long-standing issue in the area.
