Puri, July 20 (UDN): The sacred Hera Panchami ritual was observed at the Shree Gundicha Temple in Puri as part of the annual Rath Yatra celebrations, highlighting an important tradition associated with Lord Jagannath and Goddess Lakshmi.
According to tradition, Hera Panchami is observed on the fifth day of the Rath Yatra when Goddess Lakshmi visits Lord Jagannath at the Gundicha Temple. The ritual is based on the belief that Lord Jagannath leaves for the annual chariot festival without Goddess Lakshmi accompanying him, prompting her symbolic visit to seek his presence.
During the ceremony, devotees witness a series of traditional rituals that reflect the cultural and spiritual significance of the festival. The ritual is also associated with the symbolic expression of Goddess Lakshmi’s displeasure over Lord Jagannath’s absence, represented through traditional customs, including the symbolic act of damaging a part of the chariot.
Hera Panchami holds a special place in Odisha’s religious traditions and attracts thousands of devotees who gather in Puri to participate in the celebrations. The ritual showcases the rich heritage, devotion, and centuries-old customs connected with the world-famous Rath Yatra festival.
