Jeypore,Sept 7 [UDN}:A seminar was organised by the Department of Sanskrit at the Central University of Odisha in Sunabeda, Koraput district, to mark Sanskrit Day.
Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Odisha, Professor Ajit Kumar Shashani, attended the programme as the chief guest, while Dean of the School of Languages, Professor N.C. Panda, presided over the event. Dr. Naveen Kumar Pradhan, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Department of Sanskrit, delivered the welcome address.
Addressing the gathering, Vice-Chancellor Professor Shashani said that Sanskrit is an ancient and fundamental language that has united the world through a common bond. Citing his experiences during visits to various countries, he said that the influence of Sanskrit can be seen in many places. He also highlighted the significant role of Sanskrit in the development of Indo-Aryan languages.
He said Sanskrit is a scientific language with a deep connection to science. Many Sanskrit words have similarities with scientific terminology, he noted. As an example, he referred to the Aditya Surya Stotram, which, he said, contains several references related to physics and chemistry. He emphasised that there is considerable scope for research in this field.
The Vice-Chancellor urged students studying Sanskrit not to suffer from any inferiority complex, but to remain proud, confident and positive about their language. He said that Sanskrit is a gateway to knowledge. He also cited the example of a person who studied Sanskrit and went on to become an IAS officer and eventually reached the position of Chief Secretary.
He called upon everyone to work together for the development of the university.
Dean Professor N.C. Panda said the university would work collectively for the development and strengthening of all languages.
As part of the Sanskrit Day celebrations, the Department of Sanskrit had organised various competitions, including a quiz, throughout the week. The winners and participants were felicitated by the Vice-Chancellor.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks. Faculty members, students and research scholars of the School of Languages were present.
