Bhubaneswar, July 14: The 100th birth anniversary of eminent Odia poet and literary icon Bidyut Prabha Devi was commemorated with great reverence at Rama Devi Women’s University. The event, hosted by Odisha Sahitya Akademi in collaboration with the Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department, celebrated the life and legacy of one of Odisha’s pioneering feminist voices in literature.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the chief guest, hailed Bidyut Prabha Devi as a torchbearer of progressive thought in Odia poetry. He emphasized the importance of promoting Odia literature globally, especially in the digital age.
Acclaimed writer and Padma Bhushan recipient Pratibha Ray, who attended as guest of honour, highlighted the emotional depth and feminist values reflected in Devi’s poetry. Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj and MLA Babu Singh also paid tribute, calling her a symbol of strength and an inspiration for future generations.
On the occasion, a new book titled ‘Bajiraout’ and the latest edition of the literary journal ‘Konark’ were released. A panel discussion delved into Bidyut Prabha Devi’s contributions and enduring impact on Odia literature.
Sachidananda Mohanty, her son and a former vice-chancellor, shared personal reflections on her literary journey, while dignitaries including Odisha Sahitya Akademi Secretary Chandrasekhar Hota, RDWU VC Chandi Charan Rath, and department director Bijaya Ketan Upadhyaya were present.
The event brought together writers, scholars, students, and culture enthusiasts, celebrating a century of a poetic legacy that continues to inspire.
