Malkangiri, Sept 24 [UDN}:: A congenital heart disease screening camp was organised for the first time in Malkangiri district, providing a new healthcare facility for children in the district. The camp was conducted at the Early Intervention Centre located within the premises of the District Headquarters Hospital.
Cardiologist Dr S.S. Padhi from NH MMI Hospital, Raipur, attended the camp and examined the participating children. The screening programme was organised with the support of the district health authorities and the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) teams.
As many as 77 children from different parts of Malkangiri district were brought to the screening camp through 14 RBSK teams. Following detailed health examinations, 26 children were found to have symptoms or signs requiring further evaluation for congenital heart-related conditions.
The children identified during the screening have been advised further investigations and specialist medical assessment. Those requiring treatment have also been recommended for appropriate surgical intervention, according to the health authorities.
The camp also included a health check-up of 17 children who had previously undergone heart-related surgery, allowing doctors to assess their post-operative health and monitor their recovery.
The screening camp was inaugurated by District Magistrate Somnath Pradhan. Officials from the district health department, members of the RBSK teams and staff of the Early Intervention Centre supported the organisation and smooth conduct of the programme.
The initiative is expected to strengthen early identification of congenital heart conditions among children in the district and facilitate timely referral and treatment for those requiring specialised cardiac care.
