Jharigaon:June 20: {UDN}: The Maa Thakurani Cricket Tournament, organized at Mahandi village under Belgaon Gram Panchayat in Jharigaon Block of Nabarangpur district, concluded successfully after an exciting eight-day run. Cricket teams from various villages across the region participated in the tournament, making it a vibrant sporting event for local enthusiasts.
The grand final was played between Goramba and Sandasa teams. After winning the toss, the Sandasa team elected to bat first and scored 75 runs in 12 overs. In reply, the Goramba team successfully chased down the target, losing only two wickets, and emerged as the tournament champions. Sandasa finished as the runners-up.
A large number of cricket lovers and spectators gathered to witness the final match. The players displayed impressive skills and sportsmanship, providing exciting entertainment for the audience throughout the contest.
During the closing ceremony, Narasimha Bhatra and MLA Representative Ganapati Sahu attended as chief guests. They felicitated the winning Goramba team with a cash prize of ₹10,000 along with the championship trophy, while the runners-up Sandasa team received a cash award of ₹7,000 and a trophy.
The tournament was organized through the initiative and efforts of the youth of Mahandi village. Individuals including Chhabi, Padan, Kust, Ranjan, and Sapan, along with several other local youths, played an active role in ensuring the smooth conduct of the event. Their dedication, teamwork, and cooperation contributed significantly to the successful completion of the tournament.
Local intellectuals and community members expressed that the cricket tournament not only promoted enthusiasm for sports in the region but also helped strengthen brotherhood, unity, friendship, and social harmony among the younger generation. They noted that such sporting events provide a healthy platform for youth engagement and contribute positively to community development by fostering teamwork and mutual respect.
