Police said fraudsters are impersonating senior officials from agencies such as the police, CBI, ED, Customs, and telecom regulators to intimidate victims. They falsely accuse individuals of involvement in crimes such as money laundering, drug trafficking, or SIM misuse, and threaten arrest or legal action over video calls or messages.

Victims are often pressured into staying on continuous video calls, isolated from family members, and coerced into transferring money into fake “verification” or “government” accounts. Fraudsters also circulate forged documents such as arrest warrants and FIRs to appear credible.

The police clarified that “Digital Arrest” has no legal basis in India. No law enforcement agency arrests individuals through video calls, nor do they demand money transfers or sensitive banking information.

Citizens have been advised to remain cautious, avoid responding to unknown calls, and never share OTPs, PINs, or banking details. People are also urged not to transfer money based on instructions from unidentified callers and to consult family members or report suspicious activity immediately.

The Commissionerate Police has encouraged the public to report such cyber fraud attempts to help prevent further cases.
