Kochi, Aug 19: Kochi is set for a major boost to its shipbuilding and maritime business ecosystem after the Kerala government approved the lease of 18.16 acres of land to Cochin Shipyard Ltd for a new ship-block construction facility involving an investment of around Rs 5,000 crore.
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan announced the decision following the state Cabinet meeting, saying the project is expected to create around 2,000 direct jobs and support additional employment across businesses linked to the maritime sector.
The land at Ramanthuruth near Kochi will be leased to the central public sector undertaking at an annual lease amount of Rs 1.45 crore, which is expected to come to around Rs 1.70 crore including GST.
The proposed facility will manufacture ship blocks, which are large sections of vessels fabricated separately before being assembled into complete ships. The expansion will strengthen Cochin Shipyard’s production capabilities and help the company handle growing demand for shipbuilding.
The project is expected to have a wider impact beyond the shipyard itself. Engineering companies, equipment manufacturers, logistics operators, contractors and other small and medium businesses supporting the shipbuilding industry could benefit from increased activity.
The investment is also expected to create opportunities for local businesses and skilled workers while strengthening Kochi’s position as an important centre for shipbuilding, marine engineering and related services.
The project comes at a time when India is looking to expand its domestic shipbuilding capacity and develop a stronger maritime manufacturing ecosystem. The additional facility could help Cochin Shipyard serve both domestic and international demand while supporting the growth of India’s shipbuilding industry.
For Kerala, the investment provides a fresh opportunity to attract more industrial activity around Kochi’s established maritime base. The project could also encourage new suppliers and ancillary businesses to set up or expand operations in the region.
The state government’s approval clears an important step for the project and is expected to strengthen the long-term growth prospects of Kochi’s shipbuilding and maritime business ecosystem.
