Koraput: Machkund Dam Releases Water as Level Rises

Koraput, July 4 (UDN): The Koraput district administration has opened the first gate of the Machkund Dam reservoir on Saturday following a continuous rise in water levels due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas.

This is the first instance in the current year where a gate of the Machkund Dam has been opened to discharge excess water safely. The released water is being directed towards the Chitrakonda reservoir as a precautionary measure.

According to officials, the Machkund Dam has a maximum storage capacity of 2,590 feet. The water level has currently reached 2,587 feet, prompting authorities to initiate controlled water release to maintain safety levels.

The decision has been taken in view of sustained heavy rainfall across several parts of southern Odisha over the past few days. Officials are continuously monitoring the situation and regulating water discharge based on real-time assessments.

Authorities have assured that all necessary safety protocols are being followed and downstream areas are being closely watched to prevent any risk of flooding.
