NIT Rourkela Team Creates Smart Bandage to Revolutionise Wound Care

Rourkela, July 8 (UDN): Researchers at NIT Rourkela have developed a smart bandage that could make wound treatment more comfortable by reducing pain during dressing changes and supporting faster healing.

Developed by a team from the institute’s Department of Biotechnology and Medical Engineering, the innovative dressing uses nanomaterial-based technology to address one of the major challenges in wound care — bandages sticking to wounds and causing discomfort when removed.

The smart bandage is designed to create a suitable healing environment while preventing damage to newly formed tissues during dressing changes. Researchers believe the technology could prove especially beneficial for patients suffering from chronic wounds, including those related to diabetes.

The development is expected to improve wound management by reducing pain, lowering the risk of complications, and enhancing patient comfort during recovery. It also highlights the potential of nanotechnology and biomedical research in creating advanced healthcare solutions.

The research team is continuing efforts to refine the technology and explore its applications for wider medical use in the future.
