Balasore, Aug. 4 (UDN): The Odisha Mining Department on Tuesday intensified its drive against illegal sand mining and transportation, seizing six vehicles, including four Hyva trucks and two tractors, during coordinated raids in Balasore district.
The enforcement operation was carried out in Jaleswar, Basta and Baliapal following reports of unauthorised transportation of sand from Odisha to neighbouring West Bengal.
According to officials, mining enforcement teams conducted surprise inspections after receiving intelligence about the illegal movement of sand through border routes. During the operation, two Hyva trucks were intercepted in the Basta area, while two Hyva trucks and two tractors were seized in Baliapal.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the vehicles were allegedly transporting sand towards West Bengal without the necessary permits or authorisation. Authorities have initiated verification of the vehicles and their documents, and further legal action will be taken in accordance with mining and transport regulations.
Local residents alleged that sand extracted from border regions such as Bhograi, Jaleswar and Baliapal is frequently transported across the state border, where it commands significantly higher prices. They claimed the illegal trade has persisted for years despite repeated complaints to the administration.
Officials believe the latest crackdown has disrupted the activities of those involved in unauthorised sand transportation and sent a strong message against illegal mining operations in the region.
The Mining Department said surveillance and enforcement along the Odisha–West Bengal border will be further intensified to curb illegal extraction and transportation of minor minerals, protect natural resources and prevent revenue loss to the state.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to taking stringent action against violators and ensuring strict compliance with mining laws across the state’s border districts.
