Nabarangpur, Sept 8 [UDN}:: A district-level Sports Day celebration was inaugurated on Friday at the indoor hall of Nabarangpur Stadium. Nabarangpur MLA and District Planning Board Chairman Gouri Shankar Majhi and District Collector Dr. Maheswar Swain inaugurated the programme by lighting the ceremonial lamp and offering floral tributes to the photograph of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand.
Among the other guests were CDO Biranchinarayan Darwan, District Sports Association Vice-President M. Balakrishna Rao, Joint Secretary Manoj Pattnaik, and Cricket Secretary Ashok Nayak.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Majhi said that participating in sports and practising yoga helps maintain good physical and mental health and also develops greater interest in studies. Following the inaugural ceremony, all the students and guests took a pledge as part of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (Drug-Free India Campaign).
In-charge District Sports Officer Shubhan Sritam Panda delivered the vote of thanks, while sports teacher Bibhashish De coordinated the programme. Sports teacher Ajit Parija and Niranjan Nayak from the Sports Department provided assistance.
It is noteworthy that, for the first time, a three-day district-level sports programme is being organised as part of Sports Day celebrations. On the second day, various Sports Day-related competitions will be held at the school level. On the final day, a cycle rally will start from Sadashiva Tripathy Park and conclude at the Raja Chaitanyadev Nodal School ground, where outstanding students will be felicitated.
