Bhubaneswar, July 13: A devastating maritime tragedy has left fishing communities in West Bengal and Odisha in mourning after nine fishermen were confirmed dead and six others remained missing following the capsizing of the fishing trawler ‘Maa Kali’ off the West Bengal coast.
The trawler, carrying 15 fishermen, had departed from Shankarpur in Medinipur on July 2 for Hilsa fishing activities. The vessel was later found overturned near Rakhtachar Island, around 16 km from Bakkhali, leading to a large-scale rescue and search operation by authorities.
Rescue teams from the Indian Coast Guard, West Bengal Police, and Forest Department recovered nine bodies from the capsized vessel. The deceased fishermen were taken to Kakdwip Sub-Divisional Hospital for post-mortem examinations and necessary procedures.
Six fishermen are still missing, with search operations continuing in the sea to locate them. The incident has brought immense sorrow to the families of the fishermen, who remain anxiously awaiting updates from the ongoing rescue efforts.
Among those missing are three brothers from Uluda village under Bhograi block in Odisha’s Balasore district — Rabindra Majhi, Jagannath Majhi, and Jayaram Majhi, sons of Madhusudan Majhi. Their disappearance has caused deep distress among their family members and the local community.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through coastal villages of West Bengal and Odisha, where fishing communities continue to stand together in grief and support for the affected families.
Authorities and rescue agencies remain engaged in search and relief operations, while further efforts are underway to trace the remaining missing fishermen and provide assistance to those impacted by the tragedy.
