Bhubaneswar, Sept. 16 (UDN): A team of wildlife specialists will carry out a comprehensive medical assessment of the five orangutans rescued from Balasore district as authorities continue to monitor the rare primates at Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar.

The young orangutans, rescued from the Rankotha Casuarina Reserved Forest in Bhograi on September 8, have been under veterinary care since being shifted to the zoo.
Multi-agency expert team to lead examination
The health evaluation will be conducted by two specialists from Mysuru Zoo, along with experts from the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) and officials from central wildlife agencies.
The team will assess the animals’ overall physical condition, behaviour and activity levels to determine their health status following the rescue.
Samples to be tested
As part of the examination, the experts will collect and analyse stool and urine samples to screen for possible health concerns and ensure the orangutans are receiving appropriate care.
The specialists will also observe the primates’ movements and daily behaviour, which are considered important indicators of their physical and psychological well-being.
Report to guide future care
After completing the assessment, the technical team will prepare an observation and recommendation report outlining the orangutans’ health condition and suggesting further measures for their treatment and rehabilitation.
The rescued primates remain under close supervision at Nandankanan as authorities continue investigations into the suspected wildlife trafficking network that brought them to Odisha.
