Bhubaneswar, July 3 (UDN): Eight inmates at the Jharpada Special Jail in Bhubaneswar have been identified as HIV-positive during a recent health screening conducted as part of routine medical surveillance, prison officials said.
According to officials, the cases were detected during regular health check-ups aimed at monitoring the well-being of inmates and ensuring timely diagnosis and treatment of communicable diseases within correctional facilities.
Following confirmation of the cases, the affected inmates have been placed under appropriate medical care and counselling in accordance with established health protocols. Prison authorities, in coordination with the Health Department, have initiated further medical evaluation and necessary follow-up measures to ensure continuity of treatment and prevent stigma or discrimination.
Officials clarified that the detections do not indicate any immediate public health risk within the prison. They emphasised that HIV is not transmitted through casual contact and that standard infection prevention and control measures are being strictly followed.
The jail administration has also stepped up awareness programmes on HIV prevention, personal hygiene and safe health practices among inmates and prison staff. Additional screening and counselling services are being provided as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare inside correctional institutions.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to ensuring quality healthcare for all inmates while maintaining confidentiality and dignity for those undergoing treatment.
