Bhubaneswar, Nov 5 (UDN): In the aftermath of Cyclone Arnab and the subsequent floods, educational institutions across Odisha’s Ganjam district will remain closed until November 7, as extensive damage to school infrastructure has been reported.
According to a preliminary assessment conducted by the district administration, as many as 498 schools out of approximately 3,900 primary, upper primary and high schools in the district have suffered damage due to the floods.
The assessment further revealed that around 1,032 classrooms and the boundary walls of 215 schools have been affected, highlighting the extent of the damage caused by the natural disaster.
Considering the ongoing post-flood cleaning, disinfection, restoration and repair activities, the district administration has decided to extend the closure of all schools and Anganwadi centres across Ganjam district until November 7.
Ganjam Collector V. Keerthi Vasan confirmed the decision, emphasising that ensuring safe and hygienic conditions for students and children remains the administration’s top priority before educational institutions reopen.
Meanwhile, the district administration has prioritised a comprehensive assessment of the damage to educational infrastructure and directed attention towards completing essential repair and restoration work at the earliest.
Authorities are working to restore the affected school buildings, classrooms and other facilities so that regular academic activities can resume safely without further disruption.
The extended closure is aimed at protecting students, teachers and Anganwadi beneficiaries from potential health and safety risks during the post-flood recovery period.
