Mayurbhanj, Sept. 21 (UDN): Around 150 girl students of an Ashram School in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district staged an unusual protest by walking nearly eight kilometres to meet government officials, alleging that their hostel has been functioning without basic amenities for over two months.
The students of Bishipur Ashram School under Udala block said repeated complaints about the lack of drinking water, electricity and other essential facilities had failed to bring any relief, prompting them to take their grievances directly to the authorities.
Hostel Without Basic Facilities
According to the boarders, the hostel has remained without electricity and drinking water for more than two months, making daily life increasingly difficult.
The students also alleged that they were being served rice prepared from insect-infested paddy and had inadequate access to clean water for their basic needs.
Complaints Went Unaddressed
The girls said they had repeatedly informed the hostel in-charge and the matron about the problems. While the matron reportedly brought the matter to the attention of the headmaster, the students claimed no effective action was taken.
They further alleged that the headmaster frequently arrived at the school in an inebriated state and verbally abused hostel boarders.
Students Take Grievances to Officials
With no improvement in the situation, the students left the hostel and walked approximately eight kilometres to meet the Welfare Extension Officer and the Education Officer, seeking immediate intervention.
The incident has drawn attention to the conditions at the government-run residential school, with the students demanding restoration of basic facilities and action on their complaints.
