26th March 2025: Utkal University’s Department of Sociology organized a one-day national seminar on Development-Induced Displacement: Issues and Experiences on March 25, supported by RUSA 2.0. The event brought together experts to discuss the challenges of displacement and rehabilitation policies.
In his opening speech, Rabindra Garada, Head of the Sociology Department, highlighted the connection between development and displacement, emphasizing the need for resilience and sustainability. Vice-Chancellor Sabita Acharya discussed the struggles of displaced tribal women and the importance of inclusive development.
Keynote speaker Akhil Bihari Ota, a retired IAS officer, referred to tribals as “development refugees” and called for prioritizing their development.
The seminar featured four technical sessions and discussions on land acquisition, rehabilitation, and anti-displacement resistance. The event concluded with a speech by Professor Kishore Chandra Samal, who stressed the importance of economic rehabilitation for displaced communities.
