Bhubaneswar, May 23, 2025: Following a prolonged spell of heat and humidity, several districts of Odisha are likely to experience heavy rainfall on May 27 and 28 due to the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD stated that favorable conditions in the west-central and northern Bay of Bengal may lead to the development of a low-pressure system within the next 48 hours. This is expected to intensify and bring widespread rain, along with thunderstorms and lightning in parts of the state.

Southern Odisha districts such as Malkangiri, Rayagada, and Koraput are likely to witness the heaviest rainfall. IMD Bhubaneswar Director Manorama Mohanty confirmed, “Light to moderate rain will begin across most areas of Odisha from May 27, but intense showers are expected in isolated places, especially in the southern districts.”

Additionally, a yellow warning for thunderstorms and lightning has been issued for 26 districts. Over the next six days, Nor’wester winds are likely to bring thunderstorms that could combine with the low-pressure rainfall system, enhancing weather activity.

This development may also accelerate the onset of the southwest monsoon, with conditions becoming favorable for its arrival over the Kerala coast within the next two to three days, and subsequently moving toward Odisha in the following weeks.
