Bhubaneswar, March 28: Odisha is experiencing extreme heat, with Jharsuguda recording the highest temperature of 41.4°C on Thursday. Other areas like Sambalpur, Hirakud, and Titlagarh also saw temperatures above 40°C. Bhubaneswar reached 38.5°C. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave warning for the next three days, affecting regions such as Sambalpur, Boudh, and Jharsuguda.
The heatwave poses risks to vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and outdoor workers. The Union Health Ministry has urged states to ensure health facilities are prepared for heat-related emergencies, with necessary supplies like ORS and cooling equipment.
In response, Odisha’s Food Supplies Department has revised food distribution timings under the Public Distribution System (PDS) to early morning and evening hours to avoid midday heat. Temporary shelters and hydration stations will also be set up at Fair Price Shops for public safety.
