Bhubaneswar, Aug 29 [UDN}: A new biometric attendance system has been introduced in colleges to ensure a more transparent, accurate, and disciplined attendance-monitoring mechanism for students. As part of the initial implementation, the system has been launched on a pilot basis in 10 colleges, with the possibility of being extended to more higher educational institutions in the future.
Under the new system, students’ attendance will be recorded digitally through biometric devices, reducing the possibility of proxy attendance and making the monitoring process more reliable. The move is aimed at strengthening discipline among students, ensuring regular participation in academic activities, and maintaining accurate attendance records in colleges.
According to the new attendance requirement, students must maintain a minimum of 75% attendance in classes. Students who fail to meet the prescribed attendance requirement may face restrictions as per the applicable academic rules and regulations of their respective institutions.
The introduction of biometric attendance is expected to help college authorities keep a real-time and systematic record of student attendance. It will also make it easier for institutions to identify students with irregular attendance and take timely measures to encourage them to attend classes regularly.
The initial rollout in 10 colleges is being viewed as an important step toward the digitalisation of attendance management in higher education. If the system proves effective, it may subsequently be implemented across more colleges in the state, bringing greater accountability, transparency, and efficiency to the academic administration.
