Bhubaneswar, Sept. 21 (UDN): Odisha is bracing for a spell of intense rainfall as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to strengthen further and move towards the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its latest warning issued on Monday, has forecast very heavy rainfall in Odisha on September 22, followed by extremely heavy rainfall on September 23 and 24. Very heavy rain is likely to continue on September 25.
Low-Pressure System Moving Towards Odisha Coast
The weather system has developed over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining areas and is moving towards the central Bay of Bengal.
According to the weather forecast cited by authorities, the system is expected to intensify as it moves west-northwestwards, increasing rainfall activity over Odisha from Tuesday.
The system is likely to approach the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts around September 23, bringing widespread rain and potentially intense downpours to several parts of the state.
Red Alert for Six Odisha Districts
The IMD has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in six districts—Kandhamal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Kalahandi and Rayagada—for September 23 and 24.
The forecast indicates that the rain spell could persist across Odisha for several days, with authorities keeping a close watch on the evolving weather system.
Fishermen Advised to Stay Ashore
With sea conditions expected to deteriorate as the system strengthens, fishermen have been advised to return to the coast and avoid venturing into the sea during the period of adverse weather.
Residents in vulnerable areas have also been advised to remain alert to local weather warnings, particularly in districts expected to receive intense rainfall.
No Cyclone Forecast At Present
Despite the strengthening system, there is currently no IMD forecast for cyclone formation over the Bay of Bengal. The immediate concern remains the system’s intensification into a deep depression and its impact on rainfall and sea conditions along the Odisha coast.
The IMD’s latest forecast shows Odisha under a prolonged period of enhanced rainfall activity, with heavy rain also possible after September 25.
