Bhubaneswar, July 29 (UDN): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said the deep depression that triggered widespread rainfall and flood-like conditions across Odisha has moved further westwards and is now centred over central Chhattisgarh and adjoining north interior Odisha.

According to the IMD’s 8:30 am weather bulletin, the system has travelled westward at a speed of around 15 kmph during the past six hours.
The weather system was located near latitude 21.9°N and longitude 83.3°E, close to Raigarh in Chhattisgarh. It lay about 60 km west-northwest of Raigarh, 60 km east-southeast of Champa, 80 km northwest of Sambalpur, 120 km east of Bilaspur, and 180 km east-northeast of Raipur.
The IMD said the deep depression is likely to continue moving nearly westwards across Chhattisgarh and east Madhya Pradesh over the next 24 hours.
Although the system is gradually moving away from Odisha, its influence is expected to persist, with several districts likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall. Authorities have advised residents, particularly those in flood-prone and low-lying areas, to remain vigilant as rivers continue to swell following days of incessant rain.
The deep depression has been the key weather system behind the widespread heavy to extremely heavy rainfall that has lashed Odisha over the past few days, leading to rising river levels, waterlogging in several districts and flood concerns in the Baitarani, Salandi and Jalaka river basins.
State agencies continue to closely monitor the evolving weather situation, while disaster response teams remain on standby in vulnerable districts to respond to any emergency arising from the continuing rainfall.
