Keonjhar, July 29 (UDN): A flood alert has been issued in parts of Odisha’s Keonjhar district after a 30-foot breach developed in the Anandpur ring embankment following a rise in the water level of the Baitarani River.
The breach, which occurred late Tuesday night, triggered concerns among residents living in nearby low-lying areas and prompted authorities to evacuate more than 50 families as a precautionary measure.
The Anandpur ring embankment plays a vital role in protecting local communities from rising river waters. Officials said the strong flow and increased pressure from the swollen river led to damage at the embankment, raising the risk of water entering surrounding areas.
Emergency teams and local authorities have been deployed to manage the situation, support affected families, and begin repair efforts to prevent further damage. Relief arrangements are also being coordinated to ensure the safety and well-being of evacuated residents.
Authorities are closely monitoring the Baitarani River’s water level and have advised people in vulnerable areas to remain cautious and follow official instructions.
The incident comes as several parts of Odisha continue to face monsoon-related challenges, highlighting the need for stronger flood management measures and timely maintenance of critical embankments.
