9th January 2025: As cold waves sweep across Kalahandi, Bhatra Dam in Junagarh has become a popular destination for migratory birds. This year, 10 new species have been spotted, bringing excitement to bird watchers. The dam now hosts around 250 species of migratory birds that have arrived since October, with sightings also reported at nearby Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary and water bodies.
To promote eco-tourism, the Forest Department has set up a boating center at the dam and is working on a proposal to declare the area a bird sanctuary. Among the birds spotted are species like the Gadwall, Northern Pintail, and Red-crested Pochard, as well as over 250 others, including the Indian Pitta and Red-naped Ibis.
Experts note that these migratory birds travel from distant regions, including North America, Africa, and Australia. To ensure their protection, the forest division plans to introduce bird protection camps and food provisions at the dam.
