Jeypore,June 2: There is good news for students aspiring to become teachers. An Integrated B.Ed course will be introduced at the Vikram Dev University campus. The course is scheduled to begin from the 2027–28 academic session.
The state government has granted NOC (No Objection Certificate) for the programme. While the university has already completed the registration process, documentation work is being expedited. Vice-Chancellor Professor Hrushikesh Senapati stated that the four-year course will have five units with an intake capacity of 250 students.
The initiative has been taken in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Following the guidelines of the ITEP (Integrated Teacher Education Programme), the university is preparing to launch the Integrated B.Ed programme.
On May 7, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) issued a notification directing educational institutions to apply online for starting the Integrated B.Ed programme for the 2027–28 academic year. The online application process began on May 8 and will continue till May 31.
Later, on the 13th, discussions regarding the application process were held through video conferencing. On the 25th, the state government gave its approval. The Higher Education Department granted NOCs to 13 public universities in Odisha for applying to start the programme, including Vikram Dev University of undivided Koraput district.
After receiving the approval letter, the university authorities accelerated preparations. Registration work was completed three days ago. Since around 31 types of documents are required, the documentation process is being fast-tracked. If everything proceeds smoothly, the four-year B.Ed programme is expected to begin next year.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Senapati said that the minimum educational qualification for admission into the Integrated B.Ed programme is passing Class 12 (+2). Students enrolling in this programme will receive both an undergraduate honours degree and a B.Ed certificate simultaneously.
Students successfully completing the course will be eligible to appear for the Odisha Teacher Eligibility Test (OTET) examination and apply for teaching posts under the School and Mass Education Department.
The programme is likely to start from the next academic year. B.Ed education will be offered in Arts, Commerce, and Science streams. Students can choose a Major (Honours) subject along with B.Ed as a second major subject.
Arts stream: 2 units (100 seats)
Science stream: 2 units (100 seats)
Commerce stream: 1 unit (50 seats)
Altogether, 250 students will get admission opportunities in the first year.
Apart from this, the university currently runs a two-year B.Ed course with 100 students enrolled. The university is also planning to increase the seat capacity by another 100. Further steps will be taken after receiving government approval.
