28th May 2025: Odisha is making a bold stride towards a sustainable future with its ambitious plan to generate 1,000 megawatts (MW) of clean energy through floating solar power projects. The state is leveraging its major reservoirs—Hirakud, Rengali, and Upper Indravati—as platforms for these installations, with feasibility assessments underway for additional sites at Upper Kolab and Balimela.

An inter-departmental committee is in the final stages of preparing Geographic Information System (GIS) maps to identify optimal locations, ensuring a data-driven and efficient rollout of the projects.
This pioneering initiative not only aligns with Odisha’s clean energy goals but also exemplifies the sustainable use of natural resources. By utilizing water surfaces for solar infrastructure, the state avoids land-use conflicts, reduces evaporation loss in reservoirs, and enhances energy security. The project is also expected to stimulate green economic growth, creating jobs and attracting investment in the renewable energy sector.
As Odisha powers ahead with this innovative approach, it sets a compelling example for other states in integrating renewable energy with environmental stewardship.
