Cuttack, Sept. 19 (UDN): As the inaugural Odisha T20 League – CM Trophy gets underway at Barabati Stadium on Sunday, Keonjhar Miners are entering the competition with ambitions that extend beyond chasing the title. The franchise says its long-term goal is to build a strong regional sporting identity while creating new opportunities for young cricketers across Odisha.
The six-team tournament will feature Keonjhar Miners, Bhubaneswar Tigers, Kataka Panthers, Puri Titans, Rourkela Superstars, and Sambalpur Warriors, marking a new chapter in the state’s domestic cricket calendar.
Building a Team With Regional Roots
Franchise owner Manish Khemmka said the team was conceived as more than a cricket outfit, describing it as a platform to strengthen Keonjhar’s sporting identity and deepen its connection with the people of the district.
He said the vision is to establish the Miners as a long-term institution that represents local pride, talent and opportunity, rather than viewing the franchise as a short-term tournament venture.
Creating a Pathway for Young Cricketers
Khemmka believes the Odisha T20 League can help bridge the gap for aspiring players from districts that have traditionally remained outside the spotlight of mainstream cricket.
He said a structured state-level league gives emerging players the chance to compete in a professional environment and showcase their abilities, adding that talented youngsters from Keonjhar and other districts should have a clear pathway to higher levels of the game.
According to him, the franchise hopes to inspire young cricketers to believe that dedication and performance—not just geography—can open doors to professional cricket.
Focus on Grassroots Development
Looking beyond this season, the Keonjhar Miners plan to expand their engagement through grassroots initiatives, including talent identification camps, coaching programmes, and partnerships with schools and local communities.
Khemmka said the franchise wants to create a lasting connection with supporters by taking the team beyond the stadium and encouraging greater community participation.
He added that the franchise’s biggest success would be measured not only by victories on the field but by inspiring children in Keonjhar to dream of pursuing cricket professionally and helping the team become a lasting source of pride for the region.
