Bhubaneswar, July 4 {UDN}: Preparations for the second phase of India’s Census 2027 have begun, with the nationwide enumeration scheduled to commence in February 2027. Before the full-scale exercise, a 20-day pre-test will be conducted from July 1 in Mayurbhanj district and Bhubaneswar to assess the census process, mobile application, and questionnaire.
The self-enumeration programme had commenced on April 1, while the first phase of the census, which focused on house listing and housing-related data collection, was completed by May 15. The mapping work has also been successfully concluded.
As part of the preparations for the second phase, authorities will conduct a 20-day pilot survey involving around 10,000 to 15,000 people. The objective of this pre-test is to evaluate the effectiveness of the digital mobile application, gather public feedback, and verify the functionality of various census-related questions before the nationwide rollout.
Following the completion of the pilot exercise, training programmes for census personnel will be organised between August and October 2026. Since the training period coincides with the reopening of schools, officials have planned special arrangements to minimise disruption to academic activities. Additional teachers will be deployed wherever necessary to ensure that classroom teaching continues smoothly during the census training period.
According to Nikul Pavan Kalyan, Director of Census, the pilot exercise will help fine-tune the procedures and improve the efficiency of the second phase of the census, ensuring a more accurate, technology-driven, and citizen-friendly enumeration process when it begins in February 2027.
