Seven Inmates Fall Ill at Jharpada Jail; Probe Underway as Three Remain Critical

Bhubaneswar, June 24 (UDN): A health scare gripped Jharpada Special Jail in Bhubaneswar after seven inmates, including a Maoist leader, suddenly fell ill under mysterious circumstances, prompting authorities to launch an urgent investigation.

According to official sources, one of the affected inmates is a Maoist leader, while the remaining six were among those arrested on June 22 in connection with Badagada Police Station Case Nos. 493 and 494.

Following the incident, all seven inmates were immediately shifted to Capital Hospital for treatment. While doctors managed to stabilise most of the patients, three elderly inmates remain in critical condition and have been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for specialised medical care.

Taking serious note of the situation, Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena visited Capital Hospital to personally review the health status of the inmates and monitor the ongoing treatment. Medical officials stated that the condition of the patients is presently under control, though they continue to remain under close observation.

In the wake of the incident, jail authorities, in coordination with the Health Department, have initiated a joint inquiry to ascertain the exact cause behind the sudden illness. Preliminary investigations are examining multiple possibilities, including food contamination, an outbreak of infectious disease, or other underlying factors.

As a precautionary measure, comprehensive health screening of all inmates lodged in Jharpada Special Jail has been undertaken, while preventive and surveillance measures inside the prison have been intensified.

Jharpada Special Jail Superintendent said that the precise cause of the incident is yet to be established and assured that the administration is treating the matter with utmost priority. Further details are awaited pending the outcome of the investigation.
