Puri Battles Heavy Monsoon Rains as Rath Yatra Festivities Continue Amid 345.8 mm Downpour

Puri,  July 18 (UDN): The holy city of Puri has witnessed intense rainfall over the past four days as the annual Rath Yatra celebrations continue, creating challenging conditions for devotees and local authorities managing the large gathering.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Puri recorded 345.8 mm of rainfall between July 14 and July 18, with significant showers reported during the period. The city received 143.8 mm of rainfall between July 14 and July 15, followed by 89.5 mm from July 15 to July 16. In the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on July 18, Puri recorded 86.6 mm of rainfall.

The continued downpour has resulted in waterlogging in several parts of the temple town, affecting movement in some areas. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures to ensure the safety and convenience of devotees participating in the Rath Yatra festivities.

Despite the adverse weather conditions, thousands of pilgrims continue to arrive in Puri to participate in the celebrations and seek blessings of Lord Jagannath and the sibling deities. The strong spirit of devotion remains unchanged as devotees gather for the sacred festival.

The IMD has issued further alerts indicating the possibility of continued heavy rainfall in the region. Local authorities remain prepared to manage weather-related challenges while ensuring the smooth conduct of the ongoing Rath Yatra events.
